February 2024 Newsletter

This month we explore Desert Ecosystems. Did you know that deserts aren't always hot? We will start off the month by exploring the different type of deserts: sand, rocks, and frozen. Then, we will begin our journey through the desert visiting the penguins in Antarctica. Afterwards, we will thaw out in the Mohave Desert in North America, followed by the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa.

Vocabulary

DESERT

A place that gets very little rainfall.

CLIMATE

The average weather conditions in a particular area over a period of time.

ENVIRONMENT

Everything around us. Air, soil, water, plants, and animals.

ENDANGERED

Any plant or animal that is in danger of disappearing forever.

ECOSYSTEM

An area where living organisms interact in a specific way with the local environment to survive.

ROCKY

Full of or consisting of rocks.

ABSORB

To take in or store up.

SAND DUNE

A hill or ridge, piled up by the wind.

ADAPT

A characteristic of a living thing that helps it survive.

Numbers

This month we will focus on the numbers Zero and Eleven. We will learn that Zero means nothing.

Zero	0 = Nothing
Eleven	11 = one ten + one
